Michael O’Brien is the founder and managing partner of Síol Venture Capital, who leads a pre-seed investment fund focused on identifying opportunities in heavily regulated markets before regulatory clarity emerges. With a distinctive investment philosophy that views regulation as a source of opportunity rather than simply a risk, Michael helps founders navigate complex policy environments and build sustainable competitive advantages.
At Síol Venture Capital, Michael invests in early-stage startups two to five years ahead of anticipated regulatory clarity, using legislative and regulatory developments to identify emerging market opportunities and potential turning points. By directly evaluating regulatory risk, he seeks to uncover overlooked investment opportunities and help entrepreneurs transform regulatory complexity into long-term business advantages.
Prior to founding Síol Venture Capital, Michael spent more than 25 years in government relations, advising companies on policy matters across Congress, federal agencies, and more than 40 states. This extensive experience in understanding how policy decisions influence markets and business outcomes serves as the foundation for Síol’s investment strategy.
Through Síol Venture Capital, he combines deep policy expertise with a thesis-driven approach to early-stage investing, partnering with founders and investors to pursue growth opportunities shaped by regulatory change.
