About GUMBO Initiative

The GUMBO (Guaranteeing Access to Underserved and Marginalized Populations by Building Employment Opportunities) Workforce Development Initiative aims to address the urgent need for skilled Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) installation and operations technicians. This initiative supports the growth of the nation’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure by training residents in the Greater Washington Region (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) to install, maintain, and service electric vehicle charging equipment.

Why GUMBO Matters

The GUMBO Project leverages the expertise of Cerritos College, BRCC, and ChargerHelp!, along with support from eight additional Clean Cities coalitions and community partners. By engaging underrepresented and under-supported populations in skill-building, education, and training, GUMBO aims to set a standard for EVSE installation, maintenance, and repair programs. The lessons learned in Louisiana will serve as a model for communities nationwide, enabling individuals to earn high-demand credentials in EV charging equipment installation, operations, and maintenance.

Objectives of the GUMBO Initiative

Development of Replication Resource Kit

– Create a free and easily accessible resource kit for educational institutions and community-based organizations.
– Offer curriculum, best practices, webinars, and access to a Peer-to-Peer network of professionals.

Establishment of Peer-to-Peer Network

– Develop a fully operational Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network to support project learning dissemination and technical assistance.

Free EVSE Curriculum Replication

– Make a free EVSE installation and operations curriculum replication resource kit publicly available on multiple platforms.

Comprehensive Reporting

– Compile a comprehensive report tracking course completions, hiring statistics of students, and demographic information.
– Quantify Justice40 statistics and measure program effectiveness.
